'I don't want your teller fired over this': Bank teller gives $3,000 to a random customer, good Samaritan restores faith in humanity

There are a few moments in every person's life where they're given the opportunity to do the right thing. Unbeknownst to sleeper-agent good Samaritans, these moments are usually veiled with the guise of self-serving outcomes, the 'finders keepers' principal, or, in the case of the guy in our next story, accidentally earning $3,000 cash.

  • When I was younger, I was taught that if someone found your wallet and returned it to you with the cash inside, you were obligated to pay it forward (ideally with the contents of the wallet). While most people operate on a finder's keepers basis, sometimes you'll get a good egg that wants nothing in return. 

  • In our next story, a guy makes a regular withdrawal at his local bank but accidentally walks home with $3,000 in cash. Without realizing that he was saving the job of the bank teller who mistakenly cashed him out, he returned the cash with no reward in sight. Now THAT'S a blatant opportunity for do-goodership without receiving something in return.

    I was a bank teller working drive through and I had a fat stack of cash in an envelope (roughly $3,000ish) that I had set aside because I needed my manager to take it to the vault because I was over the max amount allowed to keep in the drawer at any time.

    I'm just going through the motions and some guy was doing a cash withdrawal and while I was on auto-pilot I sent back his tube with the envelope containing $3000 instead of the few hundred he was withdrawing. Worst part was I didn't realize this until about 15 minutes and 10 or so transactions later.

    I immediately called my manager and just said "I up big time". I couldn't even remember which account it was on so I had no idea who to call or who he was. He could have kept that money and we would have never known.

    Luckily he was a good samaritan and came back into the branch and asked for the manager saying "I believe there was a mistake, I was given way too much money but I noticed it wasn't taken out of my account. I don't want your teller fired over this!"

    TL;DR: Issue was resolved in under an hour and I'm forever thankful that guy was a good person and came back to return the money.

    jugstopper 12 hr. ago A few years back this happened at a bank in my town. Teller accidentally gave something like 10 grand to the wrong guy, who was, hysterically, a preacher. He took the money and ran. Like, dude, you know there are cameras EVERYWHERE, right?? Needless to say, he got busted pretty quickly and it was difficult to explain that to the congregation.
